PERMANENT OUTDOOR LIGHT SPACING
Permanent Outdoor Light Spacing: 6 vs 8 vs 9 vs 12 Inches
Spacing changes appearance, fixture quantity, electrical load, track hole pitch, installation time and system cost. Professional installers should choose spacing before finalizing fixture count, branch load and the project BOM.
Quick Spacing Comparison
| Spacing | Approx. fixtures / 100ft* | Approx. fixtures / 200ft* | Typical planning effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6in | ~200 | ~400 | Dense point pattern, highest fixture count and load |
| 8in | ~150 | ~300 | Dense-to-balanced appearance |
| 9in | ~133 | ~267 | Balanced professional spacing for selected systems |
| 12in | ~100 | ~200 | Lower fixture density and lower total count |
*Planning estimate using illuminated feet × 12 ÷ spacing in inches. Exact count follows each roofline segment and endpoint geometry.
How Many Lights Do You Need?
| Total illuminated length | 6in | 8in | 9in | 12in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100ft | ~200 | ~150 | ~133 | ~100 |
| 200ft | ~400 | ~300 | ~267 | ~200 |
| 300ft | ~600 | ~450 | ~400 | ~300 |
| 400ft | ~800 | ~600 | ~533 | ~400 |
6-Inch Spacing
6in spacing creates the highest fixture density of these four options. It can produce a tighter visual rhythm, but it also increases fixture quantity, electrical load, mounting points and total material cost. It should be evaluated with the exact fixture power and control architecture.
8-Inch Spacing
8in is a middle option between dense 6in layouts and wider 9–12in spacing. It can be useful when the visual target requires more light points without moving to the highest-density configuration.
9-Inch Spacing
9in is an important professional planning interval in G&D SMART's current permanent-lighting work. It provides a balance between fixture density, system load, track planning and total fixture count. The exact electrical branch limit still depends on fixture model, voltage, wire, connector and measured performance.
12-Inch Spacing
12in spacing uses approximately one fixture per linear foot, making fixture count easy to estimate. It reduces total fixture quantity compared with closer spacing, but the visual appearance is more widely spaced and should be confirmed against the desired architectural effect.
Spacing Changes More Than Appearance
- Fixture count: closer spacing increases quantity.
- Total power: more fixtures increase project load.
- Track: hole pitch must match the selected fixture spacing.
- Controller capacity: total load and branch design change with fixture count.
- Wiring: voltage drop and power-injection planning must use the actual fixture count.
- Cost: fixtures, track preparation and labor can all change.
Do Not Calculate the Whole House as One Run
Use total illuminated footage to estimate total fixture quantity, then break the property into actual roofline segments. Peaks, garages, corners, cable gaps and control-box location determine the real branch architecture. A 300ft project is not automatically a 300ft continuous electrical run.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best spacing for permanent outdoor lights?
There is no universal best spacing. Choose based on visual target, fixture design, system power, installation method and business positioning. For professional standardization, fewer spacing choices can simplify inventory and crew training.
How far apart should permanent outdoor lights be?
Common permanent-lighting systems use spacing in the approximate 6–12in range, but the selected fixture and mounting profile must be designed for that spacing.
How many lights do I need for 200ft?
As a planning estimate: about 400 at 6in, 300 at 8in, 267 at 9in and 200 at 12in. Final count depends on the actual roofline segments and endpoints.
Does closer spacing require more power injection?
Closer spacing increases fixture quantity and usually increases total load over the same roofline length. Power distribution should be recalculated using the exact model, voltage, cable and branch layout.

Spacing and Mounting Location Work Together
The same 6in, 8in, 9in or 12in spacing can produce a different wall-wash effect depending on soffit depth, fascia orientation and distance from the wall.
