How Far Can You Run 24V Permanent Outdoor Lights?

For the current G&D SMART C5204B 24V planning reference at 9-inch spacing, 120 lights equals approximately 90ft of nominal illuminated coverage. This is a standard planning interval—not a universal maximum single-ended run.

Current 24V Planning Reference

Fixture Spacing Planning light count Nominal coverage Maximum calculated fixture load Ideal current
C5204B 9in 120 90ft / 27.43m 115.2W 4.80A at 24V

This reference uses 0.96W per fixture as the maximum mixed-white/all-channel load. Real scenes often use less average power, but branch design should still be checked against the intended maximum operating condition.

Why 90ft Is Not a Universal Maximum

Run length depends on fixture model, actual conductor length, wire gauge, connector resistance, extension gaps, control-box output and acceptable endpoint voltage. A system with 18AWG or 16AWG may have lower voltage drop than 20AWG, but the connector or protected output can become the limiting component.

Do Not Convert 120 Lights Directly Into 120ft at 12in Spacing

Changing from 9in to 12in increases the wire length between fixtures. Even with the same 120-light count, total conductor length becomes longer, so voltage drop changes. Retest the actual 12in configuration rather than extrapolating only from fixture count.

Standard 24V Wire Route

The current standard 24V route commonly uses UL2468 20AWG with M12B 5A in permitted Dry / Damp configurations. Project-specific outdoor cable routes can use SPT-1W 20AWG/18AWG or SPT-2W 18AWG/16AWG where the exact finished system and certification path support the intended installation environment.

When Should You Add Power Injection?

Add or relocate a supply point when the approved branch plan requires it because of endpoint voltage, branch load, cable loss, connector heating or output limits. Do not use total control-box wattage alone to decide run length.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can 24V permanent lights run 100ft?

They can on some configurations, but the current 9-inch C5204B planning reference is 120 lights / about 90ft. A 100ft layout should be checked from the actual spacing, wire, connectors, feeder distance and endpoint voltage.

Can 18AWG make the run longer?

It can reduce conductor voltage drop compared with 20AWG, but it does not override connector, output, fixture or certification limits.

Is 120 lights the maximum?

No. It is the current standard planning interval for this 24V configuration, not a universal product maximum. Longer branches require project-specific validation.
