24V vs 36V Permanent Outdoor Lights

24V VS 36V PERMANENT OUTDOOR LIGHTS

24V vs 36V Permanent Outdoor Lights: Which System Fits the Project?

For professional permanent roofline lighting, voltage affects current, cable planning, connector selection, control-box configuration and installation scope. G&D SMART treats 24V as the core professional platform for many standardized programs, while 36V is a project-specific option for layouts that benefit from a higher-voltage architecture.

Quick Comparison

Item 24V 36V
Current G&D SMART fixture examples C5204B / C5205 / P23A C5204C
Typical business role Core standardized installer / brand platform Project-specific extended-run architecture
Reference standard wire UL2468 20AWG in the current standard Damp / Dry route UL2468 18AWG in the current standard Damp / Dry route
Reference connector M12B 5A for the current standard configuration M12B 10A for the current standard configuration
Equal 96W theoretical current 4.00A 2.67A
Installation-location note Confirm exact supplied configuration; Wet requires a separately approved under-30V construction and suitable outdoor wiring Current route is Damp / Dry; do not present 36V as a Wet-location system

These are configuration references, not universal run-length approvals. Final limits depend on fixture revision, actual load, cable route, connectors, branch architecture, control-box outputs, signal path and documentation.

Why 24V Is the Core Platform

24V offers a practical balance between current, component standardization and professional installer workflow. It also supports multiple current G&D SMART fixture families, making it easier to build a repeatable product range around common tracks, control-box planning, accessories and service procedures.

Why Consider 36V?

At equal power, 36V draws less theoretical current than 24V. That can be useful in a project that is deliberately engineered around 36V fixtures, 18AWG wiring, matched connectors and a 36V control system. The benefit should be confirmed with the actual layout and loaded-voltage test rather than assumed from voltage alone.

Do Not Choose Voltage by Distance Alone

A longer roofline does not automatically mean a higher-voltage system is better. A professional design also considers illuminated segments, unlit cable gaps, number of branches, control-box position, serviceability, certification requirements and the availability of matching signal hardware.

What About Wet Locations?

Wet-location suitability is separate from Class 2 and separate from voltage selection alone. For the current G&D SMART standard configurations, UL2468 wiring is treated as a Dry / Damp route. A Wet configuration below 30V requires an appropriately evaluated finished-product construction and suitable outdoor Wet-location wiring such as the approved project-specific SPT-W route.

Use Test Evidence, Not Only Theory

Review loaded voltage at the first and last fixtures, measured current, connector temperature and light consistency under the intended maximum operating condition. G&D SMART has published a measured C5204C 36V voltage-drop test example that can be used as technical reference alongside new project-specific validation.

Recommended Selection Logic

  1. Start with 24V when building a standardized professional installer product range.
  2. Evaluate 36V when the property layout or customer specification justifies a dedicated higher-voltage architecture.
  3. Confirm installation environment and certification route before freezing wiring and connectors.
  4. Validate the final branch layout with measured load and endpoint voltage.
