Wet vs Damp Location for Permanent Roofline Lighting
October 04, 2026
Short answer: “under a soffit” does not automatically make every installation the same location classification. Exposure depends on the roofline geometry, wind-driven rain, openings, mounting position and the certification scope of the actual product.
Wet and damp are installation conditions, not marketing labels
A permanent roofline light may be physically sheltered but still experience moisture. Some soffits provide substantial protection; others are shallow or exposed to wind-driven rain. The correct rating should come from the product's certification documentation and installation instructions rather than from an assumption based only on the word “soffit.”
IP rating and location rating are not interchangeable
An IP rating describes ingress protection under a specific test method. A North American wet/damp/dry location statement is a separate compliance question. Do not present an IP number as automatic proof of a wet-location certification unless the applicable document actually establishes that scope.
What installers should check
- Exact certified model number and product marking.
- Whether the certification document states the intended location scope.
- Mounting orientation and protection provided by the building.
- Connector, cable and control-box environmental ratings.
- Any installation limitations in the instructions.
Why the complete system still matters
A roofline system includes more than the light fixture. Track openings, cable entries, connectors, extension points, control-box placement and field splices can each change the environmental risk. Treat the installed system as a chain of components rather than relying on the fixture rating alone.
G&D SMART documentation approach
G&D SMART separates published IP information from verified wet/damp/dry location evidence. Certification pages keep the original holder, model and standard visible so installers and brands can review the exact scope before specifying a project.
Practical rule
If the project needs a specific wet- or damp-location claim, make that requirement part of the purchase specification and request the model-specific supporting documentation before installation.
