How to Plan a 300ft or 400ft Permanent Roofline Lighting System

October 04, 2026

Short answer: a 300ft or 400ft permanent roofline project should not be treated as one continuous lighting run. It should be designed as a system of branches with an approved load, cable, signal and control-box plan.

Start with the property drawing

Mark the illuminated roofline, non-lit gaps, detached structures, preferred control-box location and likely branch routes. Separate illuminated length from extension cable: a project can have 300ft of lights but significantly more conductor length once jumps and control-box placement are included.

Choose the fixture and spacing first

Fixture wattage and spacing determine the actual load. Do not estimate the control box from footage alone. For the current G&D SMART 24V installer route, C5204-B, C5205 and P23A are the main fixture families; the final kit BOM depends on which platform and spacing are selected.

Divide the roofline into logical branches

Branching makes troubleshooting, load control and cable planning easier. A main house plus detached garage may require a different architecture from a single continuous roofline even when the total footage is identical.

Review voltage drop and conductor size

Long runs increase resistance and voltage drop. Confirm wire gauge, conductor length, branch current and connection count. If additional power injection is needed, show the injection point on the approved wiring plan rather than leaving it to the installer to improvise in the field.

Review signal distance separately from power

A layout can have acceptable voltage while still needing signal support. Confirm the controller output, LED protocol, cable path and placement of any SFQ0401 signal amplifier or equivalent approved accessory.

Select GC08 capacity after the load plan

GC08 350W and 600W are total platform-capacity options. They should be selected after the fixture load and branch architecture are known. A 600W label does not mean every output branch can carry 600W.

300ft / 400ft installer workflow

  1. Roofline drawing and illuminated-length map.
  2. Fixture family and spacing.
  3. Total load calculation.
  4. Branch map.
  5. Cable gauge and voltage-drop review.
  6. Signal-support plan.
  7. Power-injection plan where required.
  8. GC08 voltage and capacity.
  9. Track quantity and cut plan.
  10. Final BOM revision.

G&D SMART currently standardizes 24V 300ft and 400ft Installer Kit products around this process while keeping the final branch count and BOM project-specific.
