350W vs 600W Permanent Lighting Control Box: How to Choose

October 04, 2026

Short answer: choose 350W or 600W from the approved total load and branch architecture. The headline wattage describes platform capacity; it does not automatically define the limit of each output, Class 2 status or complete-system certification.

What the capacity number means

A control box combines power conversion, distribution, protection and control. The total enclosure capacity is only one design input. The important questions are how many branches are used, how much power each branch carries, what protection is applied and how the load is distributed.

When 350W is usually enough

  • Smaller or medium roofline systems.
  • Projects with moderate total fixture load.
  • Layouts where branch loading and cable length remain comfortably within the approved design.

When 600W becomes useful

  • Larger total fixture loads.
  • More extensive multi-branch layouts.
  • Projects where one enclosure is intended to support more system capacity.

Higher total capacity does not remove the need for branch planning, cable sizing, signal review or power injection.

Do not infer branch limits from total wattage

A 600W control box is not a 600W single-output branch. Each output and branch must be reviewed against its own conductor, protection and thermal conditions. The final project documentation should state the actual output architecture instead of asking installers to infer it from the enclosure label.

Do not infer Class 2 from the box size

Class 2 is a power-limited architecture and documentation question, not simply a total-wattage label. The applicable output voltage, branch power limits, source/protection design and certification scope must be reviewed together.

GC08 selection workflow

  1. Select system voltage.
  2. Confirm fixture type, quantity and operating load.
  3. Create the branch map.
  4. Review cable gauge, length and voltage drop.
  5. Confirm signal support.
  6. Choose 350W or 600W based on the approved total load and architecture.
  7. Document individual branch limits and protection in the final BOM/wiring package.
